A world first retinal imaging device for the early detection and diagnosis of eye, brain, and systemic diseases.

The revolutionary Hypercolour device leverages hyperspectral imaging and cloud-based AI data analysis, for precision diagnostic and prognostic services.

Enlighten Imaging is a company incubated at the Centre for Eye Research Australia that is revolutionising the way we diagnose conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, choroidal melanoma, and Alzheimer’s disease. The Hypercolour platform combines hyperspectral imaging with machine learning to identify a variety of biomarkers associated with eye and central nervous system diseases—biomarkers that are typically missed by traditional methods. This platform captures retinal images using a spectrum of light wavelengths, offering detailed insights into retinal structure that go beyond what standard imaging techniques can reveal. The device takes up to thirty images of the retina at differing wavelengths all within a fraction of a second.

Developed from the ground up in partnership with Enlighten Imaging, we restructured the approach to patient stability, removing the traditional chin rest, and suspending the three-axis optical stage and stainless steel chassis in a single sleek uni-body housing. The electrical hardware system is comprised of a custom carrier board, incorporating SoM support components; high speed USB3, PCIe, and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces; and all driver circuitry required to support the imaging engine. Following an ISO62304-compliant process for medical device software, we provided integrated application software for image capture and patient management. With a belief in integrated holistic design, we also helped to develop the user interface, ensuring a seamless high-quality feel, which is also user-friendly for both practitioner and patient.

The technically advanced project involved close collaboration between Ingenuity and Enlighten Imaging. Ingenuity’s in-house development capabilities in electronics hardware, embedded software, industrial design, and UI design paired perfectly with Enlighten Imaging’s specialist industry knowledge, optical stage design, and suites of algorithms with proven performance in biomarker detection, to deliver a truly remarkable system, all with supporting compliance documentation in accordance with ISO 13485 standards for medical device development.
